What you need
- A Trilium server with ETAPI enabled that your device can reach. Built and tested against Trilium 0.105.
- An ETAPI token: in Trilium, Options → ETAPI → Create new token.
Setting it up
- On a Mac: Safari → Settings → Extensions, switch on Tri Clipper. On iPhone or iPad: Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions.
- Set its access to Allow on Every Website. Clipping a page means reading it, so it needs this to work anywhere.
- Click the leaf-and-clip button in the toolbar, then the gear.
- Enter your server address and paste the token, then press Test connection. It answers with your Trilium version when it is talking to the right place.
Common problems
“Trilium rejected the token (401)”
The token is wrong, or it was revoked in Trilium. Make a fresh one under Options → ETAPI and paste it again. Tokens are pasted whole, including any prefix.
“Could not reach the Tri Clipper app”
The extension asks the app to make its requests. Make sure Tri Clipper is still in your Applications folder, and open it once.
Two notes are called the same thing
A destination is looked up by title. When more than one note has that title, the clip is refused rather than filed in the wrong place, and the message lists the note ids to choose from. Paste the one you want into Save under.
Nothing happens on a particular site
Some pages are closed to extensions entirely — Safari’s own pages, the App Store, and other browsers’ internal pages. On a normal page that simply resists the article reader, switch the clip mode to Whole page or select the part you want and use Selection.
The server is not on my network
A Trilium on your own network can be plain http. One you reach from elsewhere has to be https — macOS will not allow plain http to a remote host, and neither will the app.
Where is the button?
On a Mac the clipper sits in Safari’s toolbar. On iPhone and iPad it lives in the page menu instead — the button at the left of the address bar — because iOS has no extension toolbar.

One purchase covers all three. Settings are entered per device, so each one needs your server address and a token of its own.
Templates
A template decides where a note goes, what it is called, which labels it carries and what its body looks like. The settings screen lists every variable and filter you can use, under Variables you can use. Give a template one or more sites under Use automatically for and clipping from those sites will pick it by itself.
